Staff and Teachers
School Director: Salwa Abed
Salwa obtained her Bachelors of Art in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. She began teaching at Peace Terrace Academy in 2001 and served as a classroom teacher and Vice Principal until 2007. She has enjoyed working with students of various ages. Salwa lives in the Bay Area with her husband and daughter. She enjoys reading, baking, and outdoor activities.
Director of Arabic and Islamic studies: Siddique Abdullah
Brother Siddique has over 9 years of teaching experience. He has taught Arabic at Zaytuna Institute and Tajweed classes at Ilm Tree. He was also a homeroom, Arabic, Quran, and Islamic Studies teacher at Al-Huda School in College Park, Maryland. Brother Siddique is one of the first graduates from Zaytuna Institute's Seminary Program with bachelor’s degree in Islamic Sciences. He has also completed the Imam training program from Abu Nour Institute in Damascus.
Kindergarten Teacher: Aisha Farooq
This will be Aisha's fourth year at Northstar School. She has been teaching for over 7 years with both Islamic Schools as well as privately. Aisha has a B.A. in Communications from the University of California, Berkeley and has been blessed to take classes at Zaytuna Institute for several years now. She was born and raised in San Ramon, California along with her two brothers. She enjoys travelling, studying, and working with youth. Aisha feels very grateful for the blessings of Islamic scholarship and diversity present in our Muslim community and looks forward to seeing our students become the future leaders of our Ummah inshAllah.
First Grade Teacher: Dorkhany Arsala
Dorkhany completed her education with a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. She obtained her teaching credentials from Cal State Hayward. Dorkhany lives in the Bay Area with her husband and two children who attend Northstar School. Dorkhany’s hobbies are skiing, reading, and playing with her children.
2nd Grade Teacher: Teena Ditona
Teena graduated with a Bachelors of Arts at the University of California, Davis with a major in Sociology and a minor in Human and Community Development. She interned as a Child Care Counselor, and a Social Worker as an undergraduate, and was employed as a Child Care Counselor at a group home in Davis, California. She tutored basic math and english to the children who resided in the group home, and acted as their guardian at PTA meetings. She has worked in the County of Santa Clara as a Social Worker I in the Department of Child and Family Services, where she interacted closely with children and their parents. She has recently completed one year homeschooling her child through Kindergarten, which involved working closely with a public charter school and a designated educational specialist in order to adhere to the current California educational standards. She enjoys all forms of art, family outings, and traveling. She is looking forward to her first year with the Northstar community and is anxious to see it's growth through the hearts and hands of all it's teachers, students, their parents, and the community as a whole.

Qur’an/Arabic Teacher-Lower Level: Arwa Mohamed
Arwa was born in Sudan and received her Bachelors degree of Science in Chemical Engineering from University of Gezera in Sudan. She migrated to the United States in 2005 and began teaching at the Oakland Islamic Center as an Arabic and Quran teacher. She currently teaches lower level Quran at Northstar School. Arwa lives with her husband in Oakland, California. She enjoys reading, painting, handcraft and cooking.
Qur’an Teacher-Upper Level: Qari Amar Bellaha
Qari Amar is a well-known and esteemed Hafiz or one who has committed to memory the Quran in its entirety. Raised in Morocco, he memorized the Quran at the age of 17 from Madrasat Imam Nafia. He has ijaza (Islamic teaching licenses) for both the Hafs and Warsh forms of Quranic recitation. In 1994 and 1995, Qari Amar was awarded top prizes in the National Moroccan Tajweed Competition, a competition of the best Quran reciters in all of Morocco. He is recognized for the beauty, clarity, and excellence of his recitation. Since his arrival in the United States, he has taught Sunday school at UC Berkeley, has led Ramadan's Tarawih prayer at the Berkeley Masjid, and currently teaches full-time at Zaytuna's Imam Warsh Quran School for children.
